The Social Security Fairness Act was proposed to reverse the rules surrounding the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO).

House lawmakers are getting close to reaching the number of signatures they need to prompt a vote on a bill that would eliminate certain rules that reduce Social Security benefits for pensioners. The Social Security Fairness Act would repeal rules known as the Windfall Elimination Provision,

Louisiana Congressman Garret Graves has secured enough signatures to trigger a vote on bill that would end Social Security on government retirees.

HR 82 would eliminate the Windfall Elimination Provision, called WEP, and the Government Pension Offset, or GPO, sections of the Social Security law that curbed benefits for about 2.8 million public employees.

U.S. Rep. John Larson opposes the bill, saying he wants any Social Security changes to be paid for, not done at the expense of beneficiaries.
